Meta Launches Muse Image, Advanced AI Model for Image Creation and Editing

Meta has officially introduced Muse Image, its first image-generation model developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). The new AI model is integrated into Meta AI and is designed to create, edit and transform images using natural language prompts, photos, sketches and annotations, the tech giant said in a blog post.

The launch marks Meta's latest push into generative AI, bringing advanced image creation tools to apps such as Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook and Messenger.

What is Muse Image Meta?

Muse Image Meta is an AI-powered image generation model built by Meta Superintelligence Labs, the company's AI division focused on developing next-generation artificial intelligence systems.

Unlike traditional image generators that rely only on text prompts, Muse Image can understand more detailed instructions, work with uploaded photos and let users make edits by drawing directly on an image or adding annotations. The model is integrated into the Meta AI chatbot, allowing users to generate and edit images without leaving Meta's apps.

What can Muse Image do?

According to Meta, Muse Image is designed to make AI image creation more interactive and flexible. Some of its key features include:

Generate images from text prompts

Users can describe almost any scene in natural language, and Muse Image will create an image based on those instructions. It is built to understand complex prompts with multiple details.

Edit existing photos

Instead of generating images from scratch, users can upload an existing photo and ask Meta AI to modify it. For example, they can change the background, adjust clothing, alter lighting or add new objects.

Sketch-based editing

One of the standout features is the ability to edit images using simple sketches or annotations. Users can draw over parts of an image and instruct the AI to replace, remove or enhance those areas.

AI effects for Instagram Stories

Muse Image will power more than 30 new AI effects for Instagram Stories, allowing users to create stylized and animated visual effects directly within the app.

Image generation in WhatsApp chats

Meta is also bringing image generation into direct conversations with Meta AI on WhatsApp. Initially, the feature will roll out in select countries before expanding more widely.

How to use Muse Image Meta

Using Muse Image is designed to be straightforward through Meta AI.

Open Meta AI in a supported Meta app, such as WhatsApp or Instagram.

Enter a text prompt describing the image you want to create.

If you want to edit an existing image, upload a photo.

Use sketches or annotations if you want to highlight specific areas for editing.

Review the generated image and continue refining it with additional prompts if needed.

As Meta expands support, Muse Image will also become available in Facebook and Messenger.

Yes, but with some limitations.

Meta says basic access to Muse Image through Meta AI will be free. However, users who want additional image creation capabilities or advanced features will need a paid Meta subscription.

At launch, Meta is rolling out Muse Image in select countries through Meta AI.

The company says availability will expand over time, with support coming to more regions and additional Meta platforms, including Facebook and Messenger.

"To make a change, just tap the markup icon on your creation to circle, sketch, or annotate edits right on top of the photo. Since Meta AI remembers the full context of your conversation, you can keep refining by swapping styles, adding elements, or tweaking details — all without starting from scratch," Meta said.

What is Muse Video?

Alongside Muse Image, Meta also announced an early preview of Muse Video, an AI model designed to generate videos from prompts. The feature is still in preview but signals Meta's plans to expand beyond AI image generation into AI-powered video creation.
