The Union government has reorganised the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) by creating two separate departments, namely, the Department of Capital Development and the Department of Urban Development, a gazette notification showed on Thursday.

Under the new structure, the Department of Capital Development will oversee Delhi- and Union government-related functions, including the Central Public Works Department (CPWD), Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), government estates, Union government buildings, land acquisition and development in the National Capital Territory, and planning and development of the National Capital Region (NCR).

The newly created Department of Urban Development will be responsible for national urban policy, housing, urban transport planning, water supply, sanitation, climate adaptation and urban poverty alleviation programmes. It will also oversee flagship schemes such as AMRUT, Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), PM Awas Yojana–Urban and PM SVANidhi.

In addition, the department will administer key urban laws, including the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016 (RERA), and the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014.

In a separate amendment, the government assigned responsibility for stationery, printing and official publications of the Government of India to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

The restructuring redistributes the ministry's functions by separating the administration of the national capital and Union government infrastructure from broader urban development and housing policy across the country, while retaining both departments under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
