Tamaño de fuente

Despite heavy rainfall in Mumbai, government and private offices will remain open on July 6, while schools and colleges will stay closed as a precautionary measure after the city was placed under an 'orange alert' for heavy rainfall. The decision was taken to ensure the safety of students, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said in a statement on Sunday evening.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds across Mumbai and issued an 'orange alert' for the metropolis.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai received more than 265 mm of rainfall and over 227 mm in the suburbs during the last 24 hours (till 6 pm on Sunday).

Mumbai rains: Air traffic impacted

Heavy rain and gusty winds disrupted flight operations at Mumbai's international airport on Sunday, forcing authorities to suspend runway operations for about an hour. The weather-related disruption led to the cancellation of four IndiGo flights and the diversion of 13 incoming flights operated by various airlines to nearby airports, sources told PTI.

The diverted aircraft later returned and landed safely in Mumbai after weather conditions improved.

Live Events

The disruption also triggered widespread delays. According to live flight tracking website Flightradar24, around 90% of departing flights were delayed by an average of 65 minutes, while 45% of arriving flights were running behind schedule, causing significant inconvenience to passengers.

In a statement, Mumbai International Airport, operated jointly by the Adani Group and the Airports Authority of India (AAI), said adverse weather conditions, including gusty winds of up to 42 knots and poor visibility due to heavy rain, affected runway operations at around 10.17 am.

As a precautionary measure, runway operations were temporarily suspended to ensure the safety of passengers, aircraft and ground personnel. Normal operations resumed about an hour later after weather conditions improved.
