The long wait is over. After 53 years of sometimes painful anticipation the New York Knicks are NBA champions once again.

Their 94-90 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Saturday’s Game 5 sealed a 4-1 series victory in the NBA finals.

And once again it was their relentless guard Jalen Brunson who was at his best when it mattered. His 45 points sealed the sweetest of victories for his team.

“I don’t know what I’m feeling,” Brunson, fighting back tears, said after the game. “I’m just like, I’m in awe. I don’t know. Whenever someone counted us out, we found a way to come back and do something about it.”

Brunson was also named the NBA finals MVP but paid tribute to his teammates.

“We’re going to find a way. Whatever you put in front of us, we’re going to find a way. It doesn’t matter,” said Brunson, whose father, Rick, is an assistant coach on the Knicks. “Does not matter whatsoever. We’re going to find a way every single time we step on this court. Every time. Every time.”

For the Spurs, Victor Wembanyama could not quite get his team over the line. The Defensive Player of the Year finished with 19 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks, but shot just 7-for-19 from the field and scored only three points in the fourth quarter.
