Ohio Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur Hospitalized After Hit-and-Run Crash

Ohio congresswoman Marcy Kaptur was hospitalized following a hit-and-run crash in Toledo on Sunday morning.

Kaptur, a Democratic representative of Toledo who is the longest-ever-serving U.S. congresswoman, was the passenger in a vehicle going to church service Sunday morning when the car she was traveling in was struck, a spokesperson for the congresswoman’s office wrote on X.

“She is active, alert, and being treated for non-life-threatening injuries,” the statement added.

Kaptur, 80, and one other passenger were taken to the hospital for treatment, authorities told 13 Action News.

“Congresswoman Kaptur is thankful for the quick actions of first responders from Toledo Police and Fire Departments who arrived promptly on scene, and the medical professionals helping to take care of those involved in the crash,” the statement from Rep. Kaptur’s office read.

The statement continued: “She expressed her deep gratitude to the hundreds of constituents who have reached out and looks forward to returning to a full schedule soon.”

A witness told CBS affiliate WTOL 11 that the other driver was picked up by another vehicle and fled the scene just after the crash.

Police in Toledo said they are in the “early stages” of investigating what they described as a “hit-skip crash.” The term “hit and skip” is used in Ohio for hit-and-run accidents.

Their investigation remains ongoing.

The House is on its summer recess so Kaptur was not expected in Washington this week.

Kaptur is the longest-serving woman in the House of Representatives and in Congress overall. She has held her seat in Ohio’s 9th Congressional District, which represents Toledo, since 1983.

Her office said that first responders arrived quickly to the scene, noting that she had “medical professionals helping to take care of those involved in the crash.”

The statement added: “we look forward to any additional information from Toledo Police as they investigate the accident.”
