Premier Cho vows to complete Taoyuan Airport expansion on schedule

Premier Cho Jung-tai attended the opening ceremony for the "Provincial Highway 15 and Provincial Highway 4 Rerouting Project in Coordination with Taoyuan International Airport Expansion" this morning (23rd). In his speech, he emphasized that Taoyuan International Airport has been a source of pride globally for many years and is now in its middle age. The government is promoting projects such as the construction of the airport's third runway, all of which must be completed within schedule to enable the airport to compete with the world's best airports.

"Taoyuan International Airport's passenger traffic last year recovered to 98% of pre-pandemic levels, reaching 47.8 million passengers, an increase of 6% from the previous year. Cargo volume also reached 2.5 million tons, a 15% increase from pre-pandemic levels, returning to the third-highest historical level!" Cho Jung-tai said that including the groundbreaking ceremony for the new National Freeway 1A project, the government has undertaken necessary connecting projects for the airport's third terminal and third runway. These projects also connect to National Freeway 1, Provincial Highway 61 expressway, and others, completing the entire transportation network. In the future, with the accelerated development of the "Taoyuan-Hsinchu-Miaoli Silicon Valley," passenger and cargo volumes will continue to climb. The expansion of the airport and runways, along with transportation volume and maintenance, must be completed as soon as possible.

Cho Jung-tai detailed that the northern boarding concourse of the third terminal was also opened last year, and the topping-out ceremony for the main terminal was completed under the witness of President Lai Ching-te. Cho emphasized that the Taoyuan Airport's third runway is approximately 4,000 meters long and covers an area of 860 hectares. The central government has allocated a budget of 37.4 billion NT dollars. Relevant units should expedite their work and complete the project within schedule using the existing budget. Upon completion, the number of flight takeoffs and landings per hour at Taoyuan International Airport will double.

The "Provincial Highway 15 and Provincial Highway 4 Rerouting Project in Coordination with Taoyuan International Airport Expansion" began construction on October 20, 2021. It is a project to build external access roads in coordination with the expansion of Taoyuan Airport's third terminal and related facilities. Because the third runway will be built on the original Provincial Highway 15 and Provincial Highway 4, a rerouting was necessary. After its opening to traffic at 6 PM today, it will provide a rapid connection system radiating outwards from the airport complex. Externally, it will connect to National Freeway 1, 1A, 2, and Provincial Highway 61, perfecting the regional road network.
