In short:

The Bureau of Meteorology says most of Queensland will experience dry, wintry conditions today, with showers on the south-east coast and light falls possible in the Wide Bay region.

The bureau is reminding beachgoers in the south-east to take care, with hazardous surf conditions expected to weaken from today.

What's next?

Showers are forecast to ease on Tuesday, with rain then possible along the state's tropical coast.

Most of Queensland is set for a classic wintry week, while the state's south-east could see some rainfall, but damaging surf conditions are expected to ease from today.

"We are in a fairly stable weather pattern right across the state … so, dry seasonal conditions that will produce quite persistent south-easterly winds over much of the state," Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecaster Jonathan Howe said.

" Most of the rainfall will be south of Hervey Bay, in Brisbane and down towards the Gold Coast, but generally looking about 5 to 10 millimetres at the most. "

A low-pressure system over the southern Coral Sea has seen strong to gale-force south-easterly winds on the south-east coast, with a damaging surf warning still in place between Moreton Island and the NSW border.

Yesterday, the bureau recorded a wave 5.75 metres high on a Brisbane buoy, while a 5-metre wave was recorded off Tweed Heads.

Mr Howe said that system was expected to begin weakening from today.

"We could still see some isolated damaging surf areas with some remnant large waves, so we're reminding people to take care," he said.

Showers later this week for the tropics

From tomorrow, showers are forecast along the tropical coast, including the Cairns region and Cassowary Coast.

Mr Howe said some falls were also predicted for the Mackay region and the Cape York Peninsula.

He expected temperatures to be slightly above average across inland parts of the state for the next couple of days, reaching the mid to high 20s.

"Closer to the coast, it'll be maybe slightly above average," Mr Howe said.

" Heading into the end of the end of the week, we do see the temperatures drop back a little bit closer towards average, and a little bit cooler than average across inland parts of the state. "

Mr Howe said the Darling Downs and Maranoa regions could see 1-degree Celsius minimums by the weekend, which he said was normal for this time of year.
