Rainbow Wool Project: Saving Gay Sheep and Supporting LGBTQ+ Refugees

In the end, the world runs on profit. From animals to humans, people hire other beings to become rich and when they are not of any use to them, they throw them away to die without a thought. This is where a different strata of humans and their courage of humanity comes into light. While most people sit back and react to atrocities with at most a social media comment, others leave their homes and take action. They make space and create a place where justice exists, thought administered by them and not the law. One such exemplary case is that of German farmer Michael Stucke. In conventional agriculture, sheep that refuse to mate with other sheep are considered "unprofitable" and since they cannot be used for breeding they are often sent to slaughter. Stucke decided to fix this and created the Rainbow Wool project, which turned these "unnecessary" animals into a symbol of struggle for animal and human rights.

How to identify a gay sheep?

To prevent ordinary animals from getting into the Rainbow Wool herd, a test is carried out by the farm. During the mating season, the ram is placed in the same pen with females. If he does not show any interest in them, then this is considered the first sign of his homosexuality. Then the ram is released to the rest of the herd of "gays" where his preferences are confirmed in practice in just a few minutes. When a ram tips its head back, curls its upper lip and takes a deep breath, this is known as a "flehmen response", a sign of arousal. Sheep have a small sensory organ located above the roof of the mouth and the flehmen response helps to flood it with any sex pheromones wafting about it. Usually, rams flehmen when they encounter ewes during the mating period. But according to Stucke, who has 30 years of experience raising sheep in Westphalia, Germany, the rams on his farm flehmen "all the time. " “They do this all the time, because they find each other attractive,” said Stücke of his 35 male sheep. “They’re cuddling. They’re showing signs of affection. They’re jumping on each other. It’s undeniable that they’re attracted to each other.”

Fate to fame

Rainbow Wool buys gay rams directly from the breeders, outbidding the price they might receive from a slaughterhouse and keeps them for their wool. Individual sheep can be named and sponsored, they include a Bentheimer landschaf named Wolli Wonka, a Shropshire named Prince Wolliam, and Jean Woll Gaultier. The wool procured from them is processed by a mill in Spain. In 2025, the project collaborated with a dating app Grindr and gained worldwide fame. In collaboration, they organised the 'I Wool Survive' fashion show in New York. Designer Michael Schmidt, who has worked with Madonna and Cher, created a collection of 37 garments knitted entirely from the sheep wool from Stucke's farm. Each look represented a male archetype, starting with Adam sans Eve and including a pool boy, sailor, pizza delivery boy, plumber and leather daddy. According to the designer, this has become a powerful metaphor for how homosexuality is still treated in numerous countries across the globe.

Saving human lives

Not just sheep, Rainbow Wool also saves the lives of humans. More than just an animal shelter, it is a human rights project as well. All profits from the sale of yarn and clothing go to the LSVD+ foundation (Germany's largest LGBT+ organisation). With the help of the funds raised from the project and donations from Grindr, the project has been able to help almost 2000 people get to safety in Europe. These are individuals who have fled countries where homosexuality faces prison or the death penalty.

For the creators of the project, the story is the best argument against the idea that sexual orientation is a "choice."

At the beginning of 2026, one of the founders of the project, Johan passed away from cancer. Now, Michael and Nadia continue his work. “Johan was also the heart of this project,” Leytes said to PEOPLE. ”It was [our] passion project together, like all three of us, you know?
