SEOUL, June 11 (Yonhap) -- Prime Minister Kim Min-seok offered his condolences Thursday over the recent death of veteran Japanese politician Yohei Kono, who was best known for his apology to Korean and other Asian women forced into sexual slavery for Japanese troops during World War II.

Kono, who served in key positions such as chief cabinet secretary and speaker of the House of Representatives, died Monday at the age of 89, according to reports quoting the office of his son, former Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono.

"I express my sincere condolences and wish for the healthy development of South Korea-Japan relations," Kim wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

"(Kono) was a rare Japanese politician who presented the principle of 'acknowledging history and moving to the future' by acknowledging and apologizing for the forced nature of the mobilization of comfort women," he said.

Kono's apology as chief cabinet secretary in 1993 acknowledged that women from Korea and other Asian nations were coerced into sexual servitude at Japanese military brothels during World War II.

The women were euphemistically called "comfort women."

South Korea, the US, and Japan have signed an MOC to jointly enter the global Small Modular Reactor (SMR) market, leveraging South Korea's manufacturing and construction expertise, the US's advanced technology, and Japan's experience. This move is seen as a strategic response to China and Russia's price-competitive approach in the nuclear power market, aiming to offer a competitive alternative in the growing Asia-Pacific region.
