Waymo Begins Mapping in Virginia for Potential Autonomous Service

Waymo has initiated the mapping process in Virginia, a crucial step towards potentially launching its autonomous ride-hailing service in the state. Despite the current lack of regulatory approval for self-driving cars in Virginia, Waymo’s move signifies its proactive approach to expansion. The company has begun transporting its vehicles to map areas in Arlington and Alexandria, with human drivers operating the mapping vehicles. According to Ethan Teicher, a Waymo spokesperson, this is a preparatory step should Virginia authorize fully autonomous operations in the future. However, Teicher emphasized that Waymo currently has no plans for a commercial service in the state.

The mapping process is a standard first step for autonomous vehicle companies looking to introduce robotaxi services. Once mapping is complete, the transition to a full service typically takes 12 to 18 months and significant investment, as highlighted by Rich Harrington, Waymo’s policy adviser, in a meeting with Virginia transportation officials.

Virginia’s Autonomous Driving Work Group is working on regulatory frameworks, and a state Senate bill aims to create a licensing path for autonomous vehicles to carry passengers or cargo. However, the bill’s sponsor, Senator Saddam Salim, does not expect approval before 2028.

Waymo’s global ambitions are evident, with current operations in 11 US metros, completing over 500,000 rides weekly, and plans to expand to 20 more cities, including international locations like London and Tokyo. The company faces varied regulatory landscapes, with 27 US states permitting driverless taxis and others, like Maryland, recently rejecting similar bills.

Challenges for Waymo include not only regulatory hurdles but also operational issues, such as a recent pause in operations across Texas, Tennessee, and Georgia due to storms and flooding, and a software recall related to vehicle behavior on flooded roads.

The presence of Waymo’s vehicles in Virginia, even manually driven, could have strategic value in familiarizing national policymakers with the technology, potentially easing future regulatory processes.

Despite setbacks, Waymo remains committed to bringing its service to Washington, DC, and is laying groundwork for Baltimore, with the long-term goal of seamless autonomous travel across the DMV area.
