UAE Exit from OPEC Marks Geopolitical Shift in Gulf Power Dynamics

The UAE's announcement of its departure from OPEC after 60 years represents a significant geopolitical fracture within the Gulf, driven by longstanding tensions with Saudi Arabia over oil quotas and regional strategy, as well as frustration with the response to Iranian attacks. The move weakens an already declining cartel that once controlled half the world's oil output but now accounts for only about a quarter.

Iranian Snooker Player Vafaei Battles On Court While Country Faces Conflict

Hossein Vafaei, Iran's first professional snooker player, begins his World Championship campaign on Wednesday while grappling with anxiety over the conflict in his homeland. The 31-year-old, known as the 'Persian Prince', admits it's difficult to focus due to the bombardment that began with US and Israeli strikes on February 28. Despite his family being safe, Vafaei describes the emotional toll as 'very, very hard' and says he is 'fighting as well for my country' as he faces China's Si Jiahui in his first-round match.

China's Iran Imports Plunge 48% as Strait of Hormuz Disruption Reshapes Middle East Trade

Chinese customs data reveals dramatic trade disruption with Iran: imports fell 48% year-on-year while exports plummeted 90%. Across the broader Middle East, exports to eight Persian Gulf economies dropped 57% and imports declined 33%. The Strait of Hormuz closure curtailed crude flows, with China's oil imports from Gulf countries down 25% in March. Analysts warn the strait has become a permanent geopolitical lever with security premiums unlikely to ease even after any ceasefire.

Deadliest year ever for Red Sea migrants with 922 deaths: UN

ADDIS ABABA: The number of migrants who died on the “Eastern Route” from the Horn of Africa to the Arabian Peninsula doubled to a record high of 922 last year, the UN migration agency said Wednesday. Tens of thousands of migrants from Ethiopia, Somalia and neighboring countries take the route across the Red Sea each year, mostly from Djibouti to Yemen, in search of work as laborers or domestic workers in wealthy Gulf countries.
