Disabled Kea Parrot Achieves Alpha Status Through Behavioral Innovation

Bruce, a kea parrot at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve in New Zealand who lost his upper beak in an accident, has become the dominant male in his social group by developing a unique beak-jousting fighting technique. Over four weeks of observation, Bruce won all 36 male-versus-male interactions he was involved in, challenging the traditional assumption that larger, better-armed opponents win conflicts. Researchers also found that Bruce developed innovative tool-use behavior, using pebbles to preen his feathers—a behavior not observed in non-disabled kea. The study published in Current Biology raises questions about well-intentioned interventions for disabled animals.
