WhatsApp Adds Prepaid Mobile Recharges in India to Boost Payments
WhatsApp is partnering with fintech firm PayU to roll out prepaid mobile phone recharges in India, allowing users to top up numbers for Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea directly within the app. The feature will roll out over the next two weeks. Despite having over 500 million users in India and launching payments in 2020, WhatsApp remains a marginal player in the country's UPI-based digital payments market, processing 130 million transactions in March compared to PhonePe's 10.5 billion and Google Pay's 7.5 billion.
