Keir Starmer to face crucial cabinet meeting as ministers and MPs urge him to resign – UK politics live

PM on the brink with Yvette Cooper and Shabana Mahmood believed to be among those urging him to set out a timetable for departureStarmer on the brink as cabinet ministers urge him to quitGood morning. “Stories beat spreadsheets,” Keir Starmer declared in his speech yesterday. But yesterday was a day when the spreadsheets had the upper hand. Most news organisations were using them to keep a track of Labour MPs who were coming out and calling for Starmer’s resignation and, after his speech in the morning, the numbers started to escalate. Here is the LabourList one; by the end of last night they were on 77.The sort of names on the spreadsheets changed too. Initially it was mostly leftwingers calling for the PM to go, with the Andy Burnham supporters stressing the need for a timetable for an orderly transition (ie – a slow process, allowing Burnham to win a byelection before a leadership contest). But in the afternoon government loyalists, and some prominent Wes Streeting supporters, started speaking out. And by early evening parliamentary private secretaries (technically, people on the government “payroll”) were joining in too.The Guardian understands that two senior cabinet ministers – Yvette Cooper, the foreign secretary, and Shabana Mahmood, the home secretary – told the prime minister he should oversee an orderly transition of power after crushing election defeats risked ringing the death knell on his premiership. At least two others – believed to be John Healey and David Lammy – discussed with Starmer how they should take a “responsible, dignified, orderly” approach to what might follow. Several others – including Richard Hermer and Steve Reed – were defiant, urging him to fight on. Continue reading...

US adds 115,000 jobs in April, but experts warn of hidden weakness in economy

US employment rose more than expected in April, while the unemployment rate remained steady, government data showed, with the world’s largest economy firming recent labour market gains but analysts warning of underlying weakness. “Total nonfarm payroll employment edged up by 115,000 in April, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 4.3 per cent,” the US Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS) said. The gains mainly came in the healthcare, transport and warehousing and retail trade sectors. US job...

US firms add 109,000 jobs, the most since early 2025

US companies boosted payrolls in April by the most in over a year, the latest evidence of stabilisation in the labour market. Private-sector payrolls rose 109,000 in April after a revised 61,000 advance in the prior month, according to ADP Research data out on Wednesday. The median estimate in a Bloomberg survey of economists called for a 120,000 increase. More than half of the hiring advance was due to health services and education. Trade, transport and utilities payrolls also increased....

Mets' Miserable April: 10-21 Record and Last Place in NL East

The New York Mets have begun the 2024 season with a majors-worst 10-21 record, including a 5-4 loss to the Washington Nationals on Thursday. Despite carrying the second-highest payroll in baseball at approximately $380 million under owner Steve Cohen, the team sits in last place in the National League East. Their playoff chances have plummeted from 87% on Opening Day to less than 30%, with the team going 31-53 over their last 84 games. Manager Carlos Mendoza acknowledged the team's struggles, stating they need to start winning series.

Mets' Dismal Start: How a 12-Game Losing Streak and Injuries Plunged MLB's High-Payroll Team to the Bottom

Less than a month into the season, the New York Mets own MLB's worst record despite the second-highest payroll. A 12-game losing streak, season-ending injuries to stars Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto, offensive collapse, and several high-profile blunders have the club in freefall, with no historical precedent for a team recovering from such a streak to reach the playoffs.

Inside the New York Mets' Historic Collapse: A 12-Game Losing Streak and Counting

The New York Mets, with MLB's second-highest payroll, own the worst record in baseball after a 12-game losing streak and subsequent series losses to the Rockies and Nationals. Despite David Stearns insisting the team is 'good,' the Mets have struggled with injuries to star players Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto, offensive deficiencies ranking last in key categories, and clubhouse concerns. The team is 139th in MLB history to endure a 12-game slide — none of the previous 138 made the playoffs.

UK Labour Market Weakens as Unemployment Forecast to Rise to 5.5-6%

UK employment growth slowed significantly with only 24,000 jobs added in the three months to February, below population growth. Payrolls contracted in February and fell by 11,000 in March, while vacancies continued to decline. Economists now forecast unemployment will rise to around 5.5% this year, potentially reaching 6% if energy prices spike further. The weak labour market, combined with the Middle East conflict driving up energy costs and business uncertainty, has complicated the Bank of England's interest rate decisions.

Mets Lose 11th Straight Game as $381M Payroll Fails to Deliver

The New York Mets lost their 11th consecutive game on Sunday, matching their longest streak since 2002, after blowing a 1-0 lead in the ninth inning to the Chicago Cubs. The Mets, with MLB's second-highest payroll at $381 million, have scored just 19 runs during the losing streak. Former Mets outfielders Michael Conforto and Pete Crow-Armstrong combined to beat their former team.
