Odyssey Marine Exploration discovered a 260-year-old Barbary corsair tartane shipwreck in the Mediterranean at nearly 3,000 feet depth in 2005 while searching for HMS Sussex. The 45-foot vessel was heavily armed with four cannons, swivel guns, and rifles for 20 men, disguised as a fishing boat. Artifacts including European glass bottles, Ottoman Turkish ceramics, and Algerian items confirm the ship's raiding activities. The well-preserved wreck provides rare tangible evidence of Barbary corsair operations, which impacted European maritime history from the 16th to early 19th centuries.
