Lyonnes edge past Arsenal in Champions League semi-final after VAR drama

OL Lyonnes defeated Arsenal 1-0 in their Women's Champions League semi-final second leg at Groupama Stadium, progressing 2-1 on aggregate. The decisive moment came when Jule Brand's late winning goal survived a VAR offside check by mere centimetres. Arsenal had earlier been denied by a penalty retake after Daphne van Domselaar stepped off her line. Lyonnes, revitalised by the returns of Melchie Dumornay and Selma Bacha, were worthy winners and will face either Barcelona or Chelsea in the final. Arsenal's defeat exposes ongoing set-piece vulnerabilities and leaves them facing a potential trophyless season.

Cherki's dribbling, vision and willingness to take risks have made Phil Foden second choice, with Guardiola building his preferred front four around the Frenchman and Erling Haaland.

It was some response to a trying week for the Premier League champions. The old guard led the way for Liverpool once more with Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah on the scoresheet, either side of a Beto equaliser, and the visitors refusing to settle for the point that both teams merited. Liverpool tried to exploit Everton’s vulnerability at set pieces all afternoon, mostly without success, but in the 10th of 11 minutes added on it finally paid off. Van Dijk held off James Tarkowski to convert Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner at close range, and Slot’s prospects of leading Liverpool into next season’s Champions League soared. Continue reading...
