The medical data of all 500,000 UK Biobank participants was found listed for sale on Alibaba's Chinese e-commerce platform, Technology Minister Ian Murray has confirmed. The breach was discovered when the charity running UK Biobank informed the government on Monday. The data included gender, age, birth details, socioeconomic status and lifestyle habits but NOT personal identifiers like names, addresses or NHS numbers. Three listings were found with no purchases made. The data was obtained through a legitimate download by an accredited research institution - not a cyber attack - representing a breach of contract. Access has been suspended for the institutions involved and the ICO is investigating.
