Oakland's Violence Prevention Program Achieves Record Low Homicides

Oakland's Ceasefire-Lifeline program has achieved a record low of 57 homicides in 2024, the city's lowest rate since 1967. The violence prevention initiative identifies individuals at risk of gang violence and pairs them with life coaches offering support and services. The program, which originated in Boston, was temporarily dismantled during the pandemic but restored after a 2023 audit, leading to a decline from 118 homicides in 2023 to 78 in 2024.
