Apple Unveils iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 Golden Gate with Enhanced Performance and Design

Apple has unveiled its next-generation operating system updates, including iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 Golden Gate, at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The updates focus on optimized performance, refined Liquid Glass design, and several feature enhancements.

A key highlight is the refinement of the Liquid Glass design language, introduced last year, with a new Settings slider allowing users to control the translucency of the effect. Additionally, redesigned icons with more glass layers aim to enhance sharpness and distinctiveness.

On macOS, changes include distinct app toolbars, sidebars with edge-to-edge content, and the reintroduction of color to sidebar icons. Mac windows now have a “tighter corner radius” to address resizing complaints from macOS 26 Tahoe.

Search functionality across operating systems has been rebuilt with updated indexing in Spotlight, Mail, and Photos for more reliable content finding. Parental controls are enhanced, with a design update for the Screen Time app and new APIs for developers to customize app behavior based on user-declared age. Parents will have more control over contacts, app downloads, and screen time for their kids.

Under the hood, Apple optimized memory usage, CPU utilization, display rendering, and networking. CPU scheduler improvements from newer iPhones are now available on older models, promising faster performance on devices like the iPhone 11. Highlighted improvements include up to 30% faster app launches, 70% faster photo library updates, and 8% faster AirDrop file transfers. Wi-Fi to cellular handoffs are also more reliable.

Beta versions for developers are available today, with final releases expected this fall.
