Australia's antisemitism envoy seeks oversight of ABC/SBS Israel coverage; Telstra outage fallout continues

Australia’s antisemitism envoy, Jillian Segal, wants a new “oversight” committee to vet the ABC and SBS’s Israel coverage, she told the royal commission.

The ABC editorial director, Gavin Fang, disagreed with the claim the national broadcaster’s coverage was disproportionate.

As fallout from the Telstra outage continues, the telco has said Australians should continue to trust the triple-zero network, with CFO Michael Ackland describing it as a “very robust system”.

It comes as Angus Taylor defended his shadow communications minister, Sarah Henderson, saying she was “doing her job” when she “tested” the triple-zero system by making unnecessary calls to it yesterday during the nationwide outage.

World Cup 2026

In the World Cup, France and Morocco are preparing to go head to head in their quarter-final match tomorrow morning.

Off the pitch, France’s head coach has insisted he is not concerned by the appointment of Argentinian officials to oversee the match.

Didier Deschamps said he had no issue with Facundo Tello being assigned to the game, despite reminders of Argentina’s win over France in the 2022 World Cup. That is a repeat fixture that is possible if Argentina defeat Switzerland on Sunday.

“We have to deal with it,” he said. “I trust the referees. Our opponent is Morocco, not the referee.”
