DHAKA: Bangladesh said Monday a letter has been sent to India seeking the extradition of key Sheikh Hasina aide and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal - who is said to have fled along with the former PM amid the "2024 uprising" against her govt. Asked if Dhaka would renew its extradition request for former PM Hasina, state minister for foreign affairs Shama Obaed Islam restricted her reply to reporters, saying, "Normally extradition request letters are sent separately, and they are sending letters for all individuals who remain fugitives."

"Since he (Kamal) is a fugitive, we have given the letter that is required for his return. It has been sent recently, addressing only the former home minister," Islam said of Kamal who was sentenced to death by the Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal for "crimes against humanity" - allegedly perpetrated to quell the 'uprising' - along with Hasina in absentia. Islam said people wish to see the court orders implemented against those who are fugitives, including Hasina. "We expect India will reply and will play its role in strengthening the relations between the two countries," she said. Referring to Hasina's recent remarks that her Awami League colleagues plan to return around Dec, Islam has recently said, "If she surrenders, the existing law will be followed. She will have to go to jail."
