Brisbane to Host Davis Cup Tie Between Australia and Poland in September

Brisbane will host the Davis Cup for the first time since 2018, with Australia to play Poland in September.

The countries will face off in a 2026 World Group I tie at the Pat Rafter Arena on September 19 and 20.

Tennis Queensland chief executive Cameron Pearson said it was "exciting" to have the Cup return to the river city.

"With the facilities we have and the beautiful weather that time of year in Queensland, it was always going to be a really good opportunity to play in Brisbane," he said.

"I'm thankful the team wants to play here and I'm looking forward to September when we can cheer the Aussies on the court."

Australia was relegated from the 2026 Davis Cup qualifying round in February, following a 3-1 loss to Ecuador.

The team will seek to win the upcoming five-match tie to progress to the 2027 qualifiers and move one step closer to returning to the Davis Cup finals.

Team captain and Grand Slam champion Lleyton Hewitt said it was important the team had an opportunity to play in front of a home crowd.

"Normally we only get that chance in January," he said. "So, to bring tennis to Queensland – it’s a great arena there.

"There’s a lot of positives and I know all the boys are really looking forward to getting up there and to start training for the tie."

Australia, currently placed number 8 in the Davis Cup rankings, has not played 29th-ranked Poland since 2013 in Warsaw, where Australia won 4-1.

The tie will be played on hard court, with two singles matches on day one, followed by doubles and reverse singles on day two.

Hewitt said he expected the team to be announced in the next month.

"We’re certainly not taking the Polish team lightly at all," he said. "We think it’s going to be a really tough match-up."

The hosting announcement comes days after the Queensland government confirmed Brisbane's Lang Park would welcome the Socceroos and Brazil for a friendly in September, followed by the Wallabies and All Blacks for a Bledisloe Cup Test on ANZAC Day next year.

Speaking on Monday, Premier David Crisafulli said events like these helped build up the state's reputation.

"I do feel we're getting momentum," he said.

"I think people are looking at what they used to call north of the border and saying 'Things are happening'.

"We've got challenges, but we've also got big opportunities, and I see events [as] a big part of that."
