Brisbane Unveils Victoria Park Masterplan for 2032 Olympics, Including Bridges and Green Space

Pedestrian bridges will link Victoria Park with the Brisbane CBD and National Aquatic Centre in a masterplan for the Olympic and Paralympic Games released today.

About two-thirds of the park will be green, public space under the draft for Victoria Park Precinct, part of a $7.1 billion infrastructure program joint-funded by the state and federal governments for Brisbane 2032.

It includes Brisbane Stadium, the National Aquatic Centre at Centenary Pool, upgrades to Brisbane Showgrounds and "expanded" parklands and public spaces.

Victoria Park was chosen for the new Games stadium by the Crisafulli government in 2025, a U-turn the premier acknowledged was the "only option".

It's been the target of ongoing protests which peaked earlier this year with the arrest of several activists who opposed its development because of cultural and historic ties.

Minister for the Games, Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie, said the plan would make the park more accessible.

"I think it will be more utilised than it has ever been before. Bearing in mind, two years ago this was a closed off golf course, that no-one in the community could utilise," Mr Bleijie said.

"I think the opportunity for community sport well after the Games is going to be more profound than has ever been the case before. It used to be a dump site, then it was a golf course, and we're opening it up and two-thirds will be available to the public use."

The government said it was investigating cycling and pedestrian links over the Inner City Bypass and rail corridor to link the precinct to the city and Fortitude Valley, and has promised it will be accessible to all "regardless of age, ability".

York's Hollow wetland will also be expanded and an "urban forest" planted to "soften" the landscape.

Consultation on the draft plan opens on Monday and runs until September 27.
