Authorities investigating a California animal shelter have uncovered the remains of at least 117 dogs, with investigators saying many showed signs consistent with gunshot wounds. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office said Friday that searches of Miranda’s Rescue Animal Sanctuary in Fortuna, California, revealed 21 canine skulls, hundreds of bones and additional animal remains across the 50-acre property. Investigators said they found what appeared to be a possible area inside a barn where dogs may have been killed. Nearby, officials discovered more than 600 dog collars in what Sheriff William Honsal described as a “horrific scene.” No charges have been filed, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities said the investigation began after receiving “credible information” in April involving allegations of felony animal abuse, animal cruelty, fraud and conspiracy. Investigators later used ground-penetrating radar to locate 117 intact remains buried in an open field, the sheriff’s office said. Officials examined 70 of the remains with X-rays and found evidence of bullet fragments in many of them. The sheriff’s office said the apparent cause of death for several animals appeared to be gunshot wounds, though investigators are continuing to analyze the evidence. The shelter’s founder, Shannon Miranda, has not publicly commented beyond a statement posted on the rescue’s website. In the statement, Miranda said recent media coverage and online criticism had created an “incomplete” and sometimes “inaccurate” picture of the organization’s work. Miranda said Miranda’s Rescue is a “no-kill” shelter and does not euthanize animals simply to make space. She added that euthanasia may occur in rare cases involving severe illness or animals considered an ongoing danger to people or other animals. “We make the most humane and responsible decision we can,” Miranda wrote, citing animal welfare and public safety concerns. Miranda’s Rescue receives animals through shelter transfers and private owners, with donations and fees used to support food, housing, veterinary care, medication, staffing and facility costs. According to an affidavit from an earlier search, investigators were alerted by two animal advocates, including one who owns property next to the shelter. The advocates reportedly used trail cameras to monitor activity near an alleged burial area before entering the property and discovering remains. Sheriff Honsal said the investigation is still in its early stages, with authorities continuing to process evidence, interview witnesses and review records. “This investigation is just getting started,” Honsal said. “There is a tremendous amount of data to process, witnesses to interview, and evidence to examine.” Hundreds of dogs had reportedly been transferred to or surrendered to Miranda’s Rescue over the years, and investigators are now working to determine the circumstances surrounding the animals’ deaths.
