CBS News Plans to Hire Trevor Phillips as Global Affairs Correspondent

CBS News is planning to hire Trevor Phillips, a prominent British broadcaster, as a global affairs correspondent. This move is part of the network's efforts to replenish its news operation under top editor Bari Weiss, following significant layoffs and the restructuring of its senior leadership. Phillips, known for his work on Sky News and his chairmanship of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, brings a background in both media and public service. His appointment has not been officially announced by CBS News, but it was first reported by Breaker. A spokesperson for CBS News declined to comment, and Phillips did not respond to a request for comment from The Guardian.

Phillips' potential role at CBS News is not fully defined, but his hiring signals the network's attempt to bolster its global coverage. Recently, Shayndi Raice, a veteran of the Wall Street Journal, was appointed to oversee foreign coverage for CBS News, indicating a focus on strengthening this area. The London newsroom, from which highly respected bureau chief Claire Day recently departed, will likely play a role in Phillips' responsibilities.

The hiring comes amid turmoil at CBS News, dubbed “Black Thursday” by veteran correspondent Scott Pelley, who was later fired after clashing with the new executive producer of 60 Minutes, Nick Bilton. The network has undergone two rounds of layoffs under Weiss, creating a need to replenish its talent pool. Phillips, who has written for The Times about his personal connection to the US and his views on Donald Trump, will bring a unique perspective to CBS News. Phillips has a distinguished career, having been knighted in 2022 for his work on equality and human rights. He chaired the Equality and Human Rights Commission from 2007 to 2012 and previously headed the Commission for Racial Equality, appointed by then-Prime Minister Tony Blair in 2003. Beyond his public service, Phillips is the chairman of the Index on Censorship and a senior fellow at the Policy Exchange think tank.
