Colorado Couple Weds in Hospital Before Brain Surgery, Staff Organize Event in 24 Hours

A Colorado couple who had been together for 15 years tied the knot inside a hospital just days before the bride underwent major brain tumour surgery, after nurses and caregivers organised an entire wedding in less than 24 hours. Gary Clayson proposed to his longtime partner, Anne, on July 23 at AdventHealth Porter in Denver after learning she was scheduled for intensive surgery to remove a large brain tumour. Determined to make their relationship official before the operation, Gary asked the hospital staff to help arrange a wedding the very next day. "Yeah, she's the last person I'm going to be with. So, we're going to make it official," Gary told local outlet 9News.

Hospital staff organise wedding overnight

With less than a day's notice, nurses and hospital staff quickly came together to turn the couple's wish into reality. "We were the wedding planning party. So, we had someone working on the cake, someone working on the photographer," nurse Breanne Burley told 9News. According to AdventHealth Porter, caregivers from across the hospital coordinated every aspect of the celebration. They arranged Anne's favourite flowers, decorated the aisle with candles, organised a photographer and videographer, provided a wedding cake and sparkling cider, and even helped the bride with her makeup and dress on the morning of the ceremony. "When our team learned that Anne and Gary Clayson hoped to be married before Anne underwent brain surgery, caregivers from across the hospital came together in less than 24 hours to make that wish a reality," a hospital spokesperson said in a statement to People.

'There she is, my beautiful bride'

A video from the ceremony captured an emotional Gary waiting for Anne as she walked down the aisle inside the hospital. "There she is, my beautiful bride," he said, adding, "Anne, you look beautiful, you look really nice." During their vows, Anne told guests that they would celebrate again after her surgery. "On Monday is the DJ and you guys will all be there with us when they remove the tumour," she said. "This guy has been taking care of me. We've been through a lot." Asked what he loved most about Anne, Gary simply replied, "Everything," adding that she was "perfect." The couple exchanged rings and sealed their vows with a kiss before Anne underwent surgery on July 27.
