DR Congo Ebola Outbreak Surpasses 2,000 Deaths in Fastest-Growing Spread on Record

Government statistics show 4,381 confirmed cases amid armed conflict, poor infrastructure, and medical strikes.

L'essentiel

More than 2,000 people have died in the DRC's fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record, with 4,381 confirmed cases as responders battle armed conflict, poor roads, and strikes.

Pourquoi c'est important

Ebola was first discovered in 1976 near the Ebola River. This ongoing event is the 17th outbreak in the DRC.

More than 2,000 people have died among confirmed cases during the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record in the Democratic Republic of Congo, government statistics show.

Responders are struggling to deliver rapid assistance to remote communities amid armed conflict, poor road conditions, and worker strikes over unpaid wages.

Data released overnight into Tuesday shows a total of 4,381 confirmed cases and 2,011 deaths. Currently, 704 patients are admitted in isolation units.

The toll comes nearly three months after the emergency was declared on 15 May. While it took around nine weeks to reach 1,000 deaths, the second 1,000 fatalities occurred in roughly three weeks, illustrating how rapidly the crisis is escalating beyond control.

It represents the second-largest Ebola outbreak in history, behind only the 2014–2016 West Africa epidemic, which recorded over 28,000 cases and more than 11,000 deaths.

Aid agencies report that the epidemic continues to outpace relief measures expanding across five affected provinces. Strikes by medical staff protesting non-payment since May have further hindered response efforts, while the majority of new cases are appearing outside existing monitoring networks.

This outbreak differs from most previous events because it is driven by the rare Bundibugyo strain, for which there are no approved vaccines or medical treatments. Clinical trials for candidate therapeutics have now begun in Ituri, the epicentre of the crisis.

On Monday, the World Health Organization (WHO) noted that transmission probably began in February, long before detection in one of the country's most isolated regions, and three months before the outbreak was declared.Initial cases were misdiagnosed as malaria or typhoid, and early testing focused only on the more common Ebola strain.

Addressing a news conference, the WHO regional director for Africa, Dr Mohamed Yakub Janabi, acknowledged that responders are "chasing the virus, the virus is ahead of us."

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus visited Kinshasa last week in a bid to help health officials with the response to the fast-growing outbreak.

Ebola was first discovered in 1976 near the Ebola River. The ongoing outbreak is the 17th — and largest — the Central African country has ever experienced.
