A bald eagle rescued over the weekend near California’s Big Bear Lake is likely Jackie, one of a famed pair from a longtime nest livestream, according to the wildlife charity behind the camera.
Judging by videos and pictures from the public and rescue personnel, “it is apparent that the rescued eagle is likely Jackie,” Friends of Big Bear Valley said in a Saturday Facebook post.
“She is in the best place she can be and getting the care she needs,” the nonprofit added.
The adult bald eagle was seen lying on the ground and fighting with two sub-adult eagles near Big Bear Lake on Thursday and Friday. The eagle was picked up on Saturday by the L.A. County Parks and Recreation San Dimas Raptor Rescue.
“When a bald eagle was found in need near Big Bear Lake, an incredible team came together to make sure it received the care it deserved,” the agency said on Facebook. The eagle was taken to “a specialized rehabilitation facility, where care is now underway.”
“Cell phone video confirmed that the adult was able to fend off the other eagles by turning over and using its talons, but was unable to fly far away,” Friends of Big Bear Valley said.
The organization said there were no indications of Jackie around the nest “for several days”.
Since 2015, Jackie has been the star of a webcam reality show alongside her mate Shadow. Fans have watched the pair lose eggs and offspring but also successfully bring up eaglets through to the point of leaving their nest, which sits 120 feet up a Jeffrey Pine overlooking Big Bear Lake.
The couple’s latest eaglets – Sandy and Luna – took flight for the first time last month.
Responding to concern from fans, the Friends of Big Bear Valley warned of “misinformation and speculation online” surrounding the incident and the identity of the eagle.
Fans were also advised not to contact the rescue agency as “they do not have the resources.”
“It’s been a very worrying wait this weekend with Jackie MIA,” said one user on the nonprofit’s Instagram account.
Another commentator added, “That’s her, no doubt. Been watching for 2 years now, I know her better than some of my own relatives.”
