대전서부경찰서는 배재대에 재학 중인 외국인 유학생 20명을 '외국인 자율방범대'로 위촉했다고 11일 밝혔다.
서부경찰서에 따르면 관내 체류 중인 외국인 수가 2024년 2만3천72명, 지난해 2만7천131명, 올해 2만9천215명으로 매년 약 10.2％씩 증가했다.
이에 따라 경찰은 외국인 대상 범죄 예방 활동을 위해 배재대와 함께 자율방범대를 결성했다.
이번 자율방범대는 중국·베트남·우즈베키스탄·키르기스스탄·몰도바·러시아 등 8개국 출신 배재대 유학생 20명으로 구성됐다.
이들은 배재대를 비롯해 대전과학기술대, 목원대 등 관내 외국인 밀집 지역을 중심으로 범죄 예방에 앞장서며 범죄 예방 홍보 활동과 지역 사회 봉사 활동도 병행할 계획이다.
배재대 관계자는 "배재대에 재학 중인 외국인 유학생들은 대전시의 글로벌 서포터즈, 대전서부경찰서의 외국인 자율방범대 등에 참여하면서 지역사회의 일원으로 성장하고 있다"며 "외국인을 대상으로 한 범죄 예방 활동과 지역사회 참여로 대학의 사명을 다하겠다"고 말했다.
