Jeff Bezos Returns to Operational Role for AI Startup Prometheus

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is explaining why he stepped back into the top job years after retiring from Amazon. According to a report by CNBC, after seven months Bezos revealed he would return to an operational role to launch his new AU startup Prometheus. Speaking on CNBC’s Squawk on the Street, the 62-year-old billionaire said being co-CEO again is “Type 2 fun” — the kind of challenge that feels rewarding only after you’ve climbed the mountain. Prometheus has become the main focus of Bezos. The startup which builds AI models for physical tasks including tools to help engineers design and manufacture more quickly marks Bezos’ first formal operating role since leaving Amazon’s CEO post in 2021. Bezos said the startup now takes up the bulk of his time, alongside work at Blue Origin and involvement in AI initiatives at Amazon. “It is a grind, but it’s a good grind,” he said, noting that nearly all his work across companies is now tied to AI.

A rapidly growing AI company

Prometheus launched with $6.2 billion in funding and announced a $12 billion round this week, valuing the company at $41 billion. Bezos and co‑founder Vik Bajaj operate as tightly aligned co‑CEOs, speaking multiple times a day and jointly making decisions. “We’re tight at the hip. We’re both jacks of all trades,” Bezos said. Why he returned: “I needed to jump in with both feet” Bezos said he initially joined Prometheus as an investor in late 2024. But as he watched the company’s early progress, he realized he didn’t want to remain on the sidelines. “I became so impressed by what was happening, and the potential, that I decided I couldn’t sit on the sidelines, and I needed to jump in with both feet. So here I am.” His decision contrasts with a wave of high‑profile CEOs stepping down amid the rise of AI, including former Walmart CEO Doug McMillon, who said the next era of AI‑driven commerce required new leadership.

“Many miles” of hard work ahead

Bezos said he’s energized by the long road ahead as Prometheus scales. The company aims to build AI systems capable of transforming how physical products are engineered — a frontier Bezos believes is just beginning.

Speaking at the VivaTech conference in Paris, Bezos said he disagrees with the view that AI will make workers redundant. Instead, he believes that the technology could lead to a shortage of available labour. “I know there’s a lot of concern that many people have, including many smart people, that AI is going to make humans redundant. I totally disagree with this point of view. And I think, in fact, AI is going to create a labour shortage,” Bezos said during his conversation with Blue Origin CEO David Limp. The comments echo arguments Bezos has made in recent months. In a May interview with CNBC, he said A.I. was a productivity tool and wouldn’t replace workers, just as people moved from shovels to bulldozers. At that time, he also described the future challenge as “labour scarcity” rather than unemployment. According to Bezos, human demand for goods, services and new opportunities is effectively unlimited, and AI will help remove barriers that currently prevent people from achieving more. As productivity increases, he argues, the need for human effort will continue to grow rather than decline.
