HYDERABAD: A pre-dawn knife attack by a jilted lover left five members of a family injured in Raidurgam on Friday after the accused allegedly broke into his former girlfriend's home and attacked her, her parents, sister and uncle over a relationship that ended a year ago. Raidurgam police arrested K Govardhan, 22, an unemployed youth, on charges of attempting to murder his former girlfriend and her family members. Police said Govardhan was enraged after the 20-year-old graduate ended their relationship and had allegedly been stalking and threatening her for months. Raidurgam inspector Ch Venkanna said the knife used in the attack had been recovered from the scene spot. "The accused purchased the knife on an e-commerce platform for Rs 249. It was delivered to him on June 16. We have collected details of the purchase," the inspector said. According to investigators, Govardhan entered the corridor of the woman's second-floor flat at Endla Basthi by climbing from an adjacent building at around 4am. He allegedly slipped into the house when family members opened the kitchen door. Govardhan held the knife to the throat of the woman's elder sister. When family members attempted to intervene, he attacked his former girlfriend and her parents. The woman told police that the commotion drew the attention of a relative living nearby, who rushed to help. "Govardhan attacked him as well with the knife. Neighbours gathered at the spot, overpowered him and handed him over to the police," she said in her complaint. The complainant, her sister, their parents and their uncle sustained injuries to their hands during the attack. She also alleged that Govardhan repeatedly punched her mother in the face before being restrained by neighbours, leaving her with a bleeding facial injury and a broken tooth. The complainant stated that Govardhan, who was then her neighbour, had approached her four years ago expressing interest in a relationship. "After six months, I accepted his proposal. However, because of his behaviour, I ended the relationship a year ago. On April 21, Govardhan confronted and punched me for refusing to continue the relationship. He continued to stalk me and threatened to kill me and my family members if I did not agree to be with him," she told police. Based on the complaint, police registered a case under Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and produced Govardhan before a magistrate. He was remanded in judicial custody on Saturday.
