K Annamalai Reportedly Set to Resign from Tamil Nadu BJP, May Launch Own Party

Former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai is expected to step away from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) within the next few days following key meetings with senior party leaders in Delhi. The former IPS officer is preparing for a new political journey and could eventually launch his own political party, TOI reported, citing sources. The development comes amid reports of growing differences between Annamalai and the BJP leadership over the party’s strategy in Tamil Nadu.

Sources said Annamalai met BJP national president Nitin Nabin and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Tuesday. Following these discussions, he is expected to formally resign from the party in the coming days.

While a new political outfit is reportedly on the cards, sources indicated that such a move may not happen immediately. However, preparations for an independent political path are believed to be underway.

Political observers have been closely watching Annamalai’s relationship with the BJP leadership for several months.

Sources claim the former state president favoured strengthening the BJP's grassroots network in Tamil Nadu independently rather than relying on alliances. He reportedly believed the party should focus on expanding its organisational presence before entering into major electoral partnerships.

The BJP's central leadership, however, is said to have supported an alliance with AIADMK, viewing it as the most effective strategy to challenge the ruling DMK in the state. These differing approaches reportedly widened the gap between Annamalai and the party's decision-makers.

Amid the speculation, Annamalai’s supporters have put up large posters across Coimbatore, highlighting his continued popularity among sections of party workers and the public.

The posters appeared on major roads and streets ahead of his birthday celebrations and carried messages such as: “Our Leader, Come and Lead Us.”

The display has further fuelled speculation that Annamalai may be preparing for a larger political role outside the BJP framework.

Annamalai entered politics after resigning from the Indian Police Service and joined the BJP in 2020 and quickly rose through the ranks.

He served as the Tamil Nadu BJP president from 2021 to 2025 and became one of the party’s most recognisable leaders in the state. During his tenure, he led statewide campaigns, aggressively targeted political opponents, and built a strong presence on social media.

His straightforward style and public outreach helped him gain significant support, particularly among young voters.

Talk about Annamalai’s future intensified after the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Political circles have been abuzz with questions about his next move and whether he would continue within the BJP structure. The latest reports suggesting an imminent exit have only added momentum to those discussions.

Recent comments by Annamalai on the Centre’s decision to advance the implementation of the three-language policy for Class IX students also drew attention.

His criticism of the move sparked fresh political debate and led many observers to view it as another sign of his growing distance from the party leadership.
