Lindsay Clancy Murder Trial Resumes with Focus on Mental Health Testimony

Lindsay Clancy's murder trial resumes Monday after jurors heard emotional testimony during its opening week and visited the Massachusetts home where prosecutors say she killed her three children in January 2023.

The next witnesses are expected to include police officers and medical personnel who responded to the scene in Duxbury, with testimony later in the week expected to focus on Clancy's mental health.

Prosecutors allege Clancy, 35, intentionally killed her children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson and 8-month-old Callan — and should be held criminally responsible for their deaths.

Her defense does not dispute that she caused the children's deaths but argues she was suffering from postpartum psychosis, a rare psychiatric condition following childbirth that severely impaired her ability to distinguish reality.

Her attorneys also contend she had bipolar disorder that was not fully diagnosed until after the killings and say her condition was worsened by a series of psychiatric medications.

During the first week of testimony, Clancy became emotional as her former husband, Patrick Clancy, and other witnesses described the events of Jan. 24, 2023.

Patrick Clancy testified that he returned home after running errands to find his wife critically injured outside the family's home after she had jumped from a second-floor window. Inside the house, he found the couple's three children in the basement. Clancy remains paralyzed from the waist down as a result of her injuries.

Defense attorneys allege Clancy repeatedly sought medical help in the months before the killings, reporting worsening insomnia, anxiety, depression and confusion while being prescribed multiple antidepressants, sleep medications and other psychiatric drugs.

According to her medical malpractice lawsuit, clinicians treating Clancy in late December 2022 suggested some of her symptoms could have been related to medication and discharged her from a postpartum treatment program after one day.

She later admitted herself to a psychiatric hospital on New Year's Eve before continuing outpatient psychiatric care.

Her lawyers say that on Jan. 24, 2023, she experienced command hallucinations instructing her to kill her children and herself.

Prosecutors reject that account, arguing Clancy intentionally asked Patrick Clancy to leave the house to run errands so she could carry out the killings.

Jurors last week visited the family's Cape Cod-style home and the businesses Patrick Clancy visited that evening as part of a court-approved site visit.

In opening statements, prosecutor Shanan Buckingham urged jurors to focus on Clancy's actions rather than the medical care she received.

"This is not a public debate about women's mental health and how the medical system treats women," Buckingham told the court.

Lindsay and Patrick Clancy have also filed separate medical malpractice lawsuits alleging healthcare providers failed to recognize the severity of her mental illness and the risk she posed to herself and her children. The defendants have denied those allegations.

If convicted of murder, Clancy faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. If she is found not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility, she would be committed to a state psychiatric facility rather than prison.
