FT: Japan twice come from behind to claim a point against Netherlands

By Simon Smale

And the crowd is...

A

By Amanda Shalala

...69,285, only about 1,000 shy of the official capacity of the stadium for this tournament.

And these Japan supporters are unreal, still carrying on with as much enthusiasm as they did from kick-off.

IT'S CHAOS HERE!

A

By Amanda Shalala

The energy in here was building to fever pitch ahead of that goal, the cries of NIPPON ringing throughout the stadium, willing the Samurai Blue to score.

And it worked, the team delivered and now the noise has lifted about a bajillion decibels. WHAT. A. GAME.

It is mean to post this after Japan equalised from a cross...

Japan playing some dumb football - stop crossing the ball in the air into the box and from non-crossing positions. Having a lot more joy when they get wide and cut in along the deck

90+1' Yellow card

Micky van der Ven is booked.

90+1' Six minutes added on

89' JAPAN LEVEL IT!

S

By Simon Smale

Ito forces a corner off a brilliant ball forward.

The corner is swept in, and Koki Ogawa heads the ball in!

It took a deflection off a Dutch defender, and then Bart Verbruggen really has to save that — he gets two hands on it and just palms it into the roof of the net.

He must have been wrong-footed by the downward direction of the header and then the deflection that took it up a bit — but he's got to do better.

Virgil van Dijk is also getting outleapt at the front post.

86' Japan threaten!

S

By Simon Smale

That's brilliant from Japan!

They fashion a cross that flashes across the face of the goal but there are no players there who can get a head to it!

Brilliant from the Japanese.

84' More subs

S

By Simon Smale

Brian Brobbey comes on for the Netherlands, replacing Cody Gakpo.

Japan makes a change too, Ueda is off, Kento Shiogai on.

83' Yellow card Depay

S

By Simon Smale

Memphis Depay is shown a yellow card for what can only be described as a shoulder charge on Shōgo Taniguchi.

Not sure what he was trying to do there.

It's a free kick in a dangerous position 30 yards out from goal for Japan.

81' The Dutch make a defensive change

S

By Simon Smale

Nathan Aké comes on, replacing Gravenberch.

80' Japan comes close!

S

Yukinari Sugawara has a great chance, making a clever run in the box only the shot he got away didn't have any venom and Bart Verbruggen comfortably gathers.

Sugawara was leaning back as he struck it, falling away too, and that cost him the chance to get any power on the ball.

76' Chance Netherlands

S

By Simon Smale

The Dutch have another chance to score here, the ball helped on in the penalty area but there's not enough space for Quinten Timber to get a solid shot away and Suzuki comes out and saves.

75' Japan make a triple change

S

By Simon Smale

Watanabe, Doan and Kubo are coming off.

Yukinari Sugawara, Koki Ogawa and Takehiro Tomiyasu on.

73' Great save!

S

By Simon Smale

Cody Gakpo races down the left side, cuts back inside and fires low at the front post where Suzuki makes a good save.

Japan are momentarily down to 10 I think, Takefusa Kubo is getting treatment at the side of the pitch.

70' And now there are subs

S

By Simon Smale

No, not during the pointless drinks break, but immediately after, during which the teams could be having a drink if it were required, which it is most definitely not inside an air-conditioned stadium.

Reijnders, Malen and Summerville are off. Big call taking Summerville off, I think.

Memphis Depay, Teun Koopmeiners and Quinten Timber come on.

Japan made a change just before the drinks, too - Junya Ito on for Daizen Maeda.

Summerville covered in glory

A

By Amanda Shalala

Wow wow wow, has this game opened up.

Summerville sprinted straight for the bench to celebrate that one. Talk about pinpoint perfection, it just pinged in off the post.

Still no idea which way this will finish, feels like there could be a couple more goals in this one. HOW GOOD.

Game gets good, so let's have a break

S

By Simon Smale

I hate the mid-half ad breaks more and more every game.

Just as this one has really livened up and the teams are stretched, we have a chance for the coaches to re-order things.

It fundamentally changes how the game should be played by having such a long break in the middle of a half and I hate it.

Questions ouvertes

  • What will be the final score?
  • Will there be more goals?
