Pourquoi c'est important

Martin Wiberg, 48, died in hospital over two months after he was allegedly attacked at a Darwin bus stop. He was allegedly assaulted by four men and suffered serious head injuries. Three men were charged with intending to cause serious harm.

Taille de police

A "beautiful, kind, caring man" has died in hospital more than two months after he was allegedly bashed at a Darwin bus stop.

Martin Wiberg, 48, was allegedly knocked to the ground and had his head stomped on by four men at a Casuarina bus stop in March.

Paramedics treated Mr Wiberg at the scene for serious head injuries, before he was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical condition.

At the time, three men were charged with intending to cause serious harm over the incident and are expected to face court in June.

On Wednesday, police confirmed Mr Wiberg had died in hospital.

In the wake of Mr Wiberg's death, Darwin's animal rescue and karaoke communities remembered him as having a "heart of gold."

Mr Wiberg's close friend, who did not wish to be named, told the ABC she was "still reeling in shock" and had visited Mr Wiberg in hospital every day.

"[I'm] wavering constantly between angry and utter sadness," she said.

The woman said Mr Wiberg was the full-time carer of his brother who lived with disabilities, and was a dedicated owner of his 12 cats and dog, Nala.

"Martin was the kindest most generous man; he'd willingly give up his last dollar for anyone in need, most especially an animal," she said.

Local musician David Moore paid tribute to his friend, affectionately known as Marty, saying he was "a very gentle soul" who was always willing to lend a hand.

"He wasn't afraid to express himself either, through his music or through his action," Mr Moore said.

"He was an independent thinker.

"Without over generalising it, he did have a heart of gold."

Mr Moore said he placed a microphone signed by Mr Wiberg's friends in his hospital room as a "token of strength."

"I honestly thought he was on the mend,"

"It was a bit of a shock to everyone, because most people did think he was going to get out of this."

Death months after bus exchange closed

In October last year, the NT government closed the Casuarina bus interchange in an effort to "help reduce antisocial behaviour".

The former interchange, located at the city's largest shopping complex, has since continued as a bus stop.

Last month, a spokesperson for the Department of Logistics and Infrastructure said closing the Casuarina bus interchange had resulted in a 65 per cent drop in incidents that required a response from the Transit Safety Unit (TSU).

The spokesperson said TSU officers attended 2,023 incidents in the three months before the closure, but in the three months after, that figure fell to 710 — an average of eight incidents a day.
