Mauricio Ruffy just proposed!

J

By Jon Healy

Joe Rogan asks Mauricio Ruffy about whether he wants a title shot and he delivers a very long answer in Portuguese.

The translator eventually gets a chance to translate to English and reveals a standard answer …

"I wanna be the champion of this division. I do believe I am next up for the title shot."

And a not so standard answer …

"What better place to ask my wife to get married. Neidine I love you. Would you marry me since we're right here in the White House?"

She apparently gave the thumbs up.

Happy for the kids, but may this kind of love never find me.

Another knockout! Mauricio Ruffy floors Michael Chandler

J

By Jon Healy

That was dominant from Mauricio Ruffy.

Two spinning back kicks, a sharp jab, a hard right uppercut and an absolutely vicious left into Michael Chandler's liver did the damage.

And he celebrates with a bit of capoeira.

Ruffy and Diego Lopes doing Brazil proud at this White House event.

Ding ding ding, Ruffy vs Chandler is underway

J

By Jon Healy

The USA chants are back! Forty-year-old Michael Chandler is hunting Mauricio Ruffy. The American definitely the aggressor in the opening minute.

Ruffy has a big reach advantage and is working his jab and some early leg kicks. My tibialis anterior is hurting just watching.

Ruffy hits Chandler with a spinning back kick. You know it landed because Chandler was very quick to say how much it absolutely didn't hurt at all. Not even a little bit. At all.

Chandler tries launching off the cage, but misses and he's almost flattened.

RUFFY IS ALL OVER HIM!

A spinning back heel lands hard, even through a block and he follows up with a jab that leaves Chandler bloodied.

And he rocks him again with a right hand.

A few technical issues

I'm unable to watch on the Paramount+ stream, is your stream up and running?

- Blake

My stream is all good, Blake, but there are a lot of crossed wires.

I'm catching hot mics, American ads, advertising audio with nothing on screen … it's a bit of a mess to be honest.

Here come the next fighters

J

By Jon Healy

American Michael Chandler is first out of the White House, draped in an American flag.

If you're looking for a reason to cheer for someone, I feel I should tell you Australian featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski is in the corner of Chandler's opponent, Brazilian Mauricio Ruffy.

Tyson Fury announces Anthony Joshua fight

J

By Jon Healy

Don McLean's American Pie started, then made a hard pivot to Sex On Fire by Kings of Leon as former boxing heavyweight champion Tyson Fury emerged.

He's apparently got a "massive, massive, massive" announcement with Dana White.

He says he's going to let White do the talking but then interviewer Jon Anik lets the cat out of the bag, saying there's a fight with Anthony Joshua in the offing.

The heavyweight champions are apparently set for a long-awaited fight in August!

Daniel Cormier on dicey stand-up call

J

By Jon Healy

"Nickal had Daukaus under total control on the ground with 80 seconds left in the round" Are you aware of what "full guard" is, big fella? If you're in someone's full guard, you are not in total control lmao

- Aussie

It didn't matter to Bo Nickal, who finished Kyle Daukaus with his striking, but standing fighters up is always likely to tick off wrestling purists.

And, speaking of wrestling purists, here's what former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion and Freestyle Wrestling world championships bronze medallist Daniel Cormier thought of it.

"Oh man. He just landed two really nice elbows right there. To stand them up there was very odd."

Simpsons did it

If you could supply a Simpsons gif that would showcase this farce I would be very appreciative.

When is Sean O'Malley fighting?

J

By Jon Healy

what time omalley fight please

- Muhammed

Hey Muhammed,

I can't lie. I'm not sure.

There are only two more fights between now and then though — Mauricio Ruffy vs Michael Chandler and then Josh Hokit vs Derrick Lewis.

The first two fights were scheduled for three rounds, but ended in one and a bit each, so it won't be too long if we keep going like that.

Bo Nickal gets the second knockout of the night

J

By Jon Healy

Bo Nickal is a wrestler from way back, but he's got another knockout victory with a brutal series on Kyle Daukaus after they were stood up by referee Jason Herzog.

Nickal grazed Daukaus's face with a front kick, followed it up with a solid left and then floored him with a right hand flush to the chin.

Nickal's win prompts another "USA! USA!" chant (I'll just let you know when this isn't happening) and he rushes over to Donald Trump for a long chat.

"I just want to say thank you. This wouldn't be possible without you," Nickal whispers into his ear.

I mean, he's not wrong. No other president would do this.

Our next fighters are in the octagon

J

By Jon Healy

Superstar Bo Nickal is taking on Kyle Daukaus in the middleweight fight.

Daukaus is back in the UFC after not having his contract renewed back in 2023.

Nickal is an elite wrestler and has immediately taken Daukaus to the ground, slipping under a shot and lifting Daukaus off his feet, dumping him on his back.

Nickal's opened up a cut on Daukaus's forehead with some tight elbows in the grapple.

The referee stands them up!

Nickal had Daukaus under total control on the ground with 80 seconds left in the round and was working to hit him with elbows and body shots, but the referee isn't seeing enough activity and stands them up. Controversial call.

Fights at the White House

J

By Jon Healy

I dont like the idea of The White House hosting a Fight outside the Whitehouse. There should be no fighting near politics. America wake Up

- Madden

Madden, I'll be honest, the way your message is worded I initially thought you were outrage this was being held outside and were calling for the fight to be staged inside the White House.

Dana's a very happy boy

J

By Jon Healy

Fair to say UFC president Dana White is pretty proud of himself for getting this event on.

Look at his little (well, big) face.

Sesqui? Semi? Silly?

J

By Jon Healy

"It's all part of the United States's sesquicentennial celebrations ..." I think you might mean the semiquincentennial celebrations. We're about a century too late for the sesquicentennial.

- Sam

Right you are Sam.

I should say, I don't know if we need a separate word for 250th anniversary. But that's a conversation I should probably have with Roly Sussex.

Comments from the cheap seats

John, you don't need to update the posts like a typical beta male. Enjoy the spectacle for what it is, you don't need to be effeminate.

- Adam

Thanks Adam. I'll keep that in mind.

LOPES DROPS GARCIA!

J

By Jon Healy

Steve Garcia comes out hot to start the second round, clocking Lopes with another straight left and a strong right jab, but then they start trading blows in close and Lopes finds his range.

The left hook lands and drops Garcia to his knees, and he follows up with a right and left combo to put him on his backside and closes it out with a knockout victory.

Lopes celebrates by climbing to the top of the cage and standing very cautiously before quickly jumping off.

He points towards Donald Trump and Dana White, then tells the commentary team he's unbeatable at 145 pounds. He's 2-2 in his last four fights by the way.

"Bro, this is unbelievable. Whole week I don't believe this is happening," Lopes says.

The fighting is underway

J

By Jon Healy

Diego Lopes and Steve Garcia are feeling each other out in the first of three rounds.

Lopes lands the first real shot of the night, launching with a couple of high right kicks, before landing with some heavy right hands.

But Garcia clocks him with an overhand right, which seems to rattle the Brazilian.

The crowd likes it, but not as much as it does when some bloke shouts "HAPPY BIRTHDAY PRESIDENT TRUMP!". Comfortably the biggest cheer of the night.

"LET'S GO LOPES!" goes the chant. Hmmmm, cheering against the American on the South Lawn of the White House. That's not very semiquincentennial birthday celebration of you.

As Daniel Cormier points out in commentary, "he's the known commodity" so it's no surprise the fans are getting behind him.

But that's a really strong start by Garcia, ending the round with good straight left to the face of Lopes. Tight round, but Garcia might have nabbed that one on points.

Tale of the tape

J

By Jon Healy

Here's how Diego Lopes and Steve Garcia match up.
