Nigel Farage Faces Lowest Approval Rating Amid Clacton By-Election Controversy

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage’s personal approval rating has fallen to its lowest level since the 2024 general election, according to an Opinium poll, as the Reform UK leader faces scrutiny over his party’s finances and political donations.

The survey of around 2,000 Britons found Farage’s net approval rating had dropped to minus 27 percentage points, with 52 per cent disapproving of his performance compared with 25 per cent approving.

The poll also found Reform UK’s support easing slightly, although the party continues to lead Labour and the Conservatives in several national voting intention surveys.

The decline comes after weeks of controversy surrounding donations linked to billionaire businessman Christopher Harborne and convicted fraudster George Cottrell, both of whom have featured in separate rows over funding connected to Farage and Reform UK.

Farage has denied any wrongdoing, accusing the political establishment of orchestrating a campaign against him and insisting the investigations are politically motivated.

Why is there a Clacton by-election?

The by-election followed Farage's resignation as MP for Clacton, with the Reform UK leader arguing that voters should be "the judges" of his conduct amid the controversy over his political funding He has described the scrutiny over donations as an "establishment stitch-up" and framed the contest as a battle between ordinary voters and Britain's political elite.

The by-election will be held on August 13, Reuters reported, citing local authorities.

Why are major parties boycotting the contest?

Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party have all declined to field candidates in the August 13 Clacton by-election.

The parties have dismissed the vote as a political stunt designed to shift attention away from the controversy surrounding Farage's finances.

Their decision has left the Reform leader facing a field dominated by independent and novelty candidates rather than traditional political rivals.

Who is Count Binface?

With mainstream parties boycotting the contest, Farage's biggest challenger is expected to be Count Binface — the trash-can-helmeted comedian and satirical political character portrayed by comedian Jon Harvey.

The self-described 5,900-year-old intergalactic space warrior from the planet Sigma IX has become a familiar figure in British elections since 2019, regularly contesting high-profile races against leading politicians.

Count Binface has previously stood against former prime minister Rishi Sunak, London mayoral candidates and, most recently, Andy Burnham in the Makerfield by-election.

Despite his comic persona, he campaigns on a tongue-in-cheek manifesto and insists he is a serious political candidate.

His campaign in Clacton has also attracted attention after green energy entrepreneur and Labour donor Dale Vince said he hoped to help fund the satirical candidate's bid.

A contest filled with novelty candidates

The absence of Britain's main political parties has turned the Clacton by-election into an unusual contest featuring an array of eccentric candidates.

Among those expected to challenge Farage are wildlife campaigner Rob Pownall, who campaigns dressed in a full-body fox costume, Mr Fishfinger, who legally adopted his aquatic name by deed poll, veteran eccentric politician Howling Laud Hope of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party, and Reclaim Party leader Laurence Fox.

With mainstream opposition absent, the campaign has quickly become one of Britain's most unconventional electoral battles, with the spotlight shifting as much to Count Binface's satirical campaign as to Farage's bid to win back his seat.
