Pourquoi c'est important

Prashant Kishor, a renowned election strategist, secured his first electoral victory in the Bankipur Assembly bypoll, a seat previously held by the BJP, after his Jan Suraaj Party failed to win any seats in the 2025 Bihar Assembly election.

Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor secured his maiden electoral victory on Monday, opening up a commanding lead in the Bankipur Assembly bypoll in Bihar, a constituency long regarded as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stronghold.

Kishor sealed a resounding victory in the bypoll, defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar by 19,324 votes to mark his electoral debut with a decisive win in one of the BJP's safest urban bastions in Bihar. The Jan Suraaj Party founder polled 64,151 votes, while Neeraj Kumar secured 44,827 votes. RJD's Rekha Kumari finished a distant third with 14,273 votes, underscoring the bipolar nature of the contest and capping a dramatic turnaround for Kishor after his fledgling party failed to win a single seat in the 2025 Bihar Assembly election.

Kishor, one of India's best-known election strategists, established an early lead in the opening round and steadily widened the gap as counting progressed, putting him on the brink of a landmark victory in a seat vacated by Bihar BJP president Nitin Nabin following his election to the Rajya Sabha.

Celebrations broke out at the Jan Suraaj Party office as the counting trends strengthened, replacing the disappointment that had gripped the fledgling outfit after it failed to win a single seat in the Bihar Assembly elections held in November last year.

"This is the beginning of a golden age for our party," said bureaucrat-turned-politician Manoj Bharti, the state president of the Jan Suraaj Party.

"In a democracy, the will of the people is supreme. The verdict is a message to parties and leaders who arrogantly think of constituencies as fiefdoms," he said.

The contrast was stark in the BJP camp. The morning's confidence—when party workers had gathered at a sweets shop in Patna to collect around 200 kg of laddoos in anticipation of a comfortable victory—gave way to visible disappointment as Kishor's lead continued to grow through the day.

The bypoll assumed significance after Kishor, who chose not to contest the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections despite launching the Jan Suraaj Party, entered the fray describing the contest as a "referendum" on the BJP-led government in the state. He had also claimed that a victory would force Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary to resign.

The contest was held on July 30 after Nitin Nabin vacated the seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha. In the 2025 Assembly election, Nabin had defeated the RJD candidate by a margin of around 50,000 votes.

As the trends pointed decisively in Kishor's favour, leaders beyond the Jan Suraaj Party also hailed the outcome.

Janshakti Janata Dal president Tej Pratap Yadav, the estranged elder son of RJD chief Lalu Prasad, described the result as "a lesson to the arrogant BJP". CPI(ML) Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya echoed similar sentiments.

Polling on July 30 was preceded by an intense campaign, with both the BJP and Jan Suraaj accusing each other of electoral malpractice and approaching the Election Commission with complaints.

"The verdict in Bankipur must be viewed in the backdrop of the wider dissatisfaction with the BJP which recently got reflected in the students' protests. Of course, credit must also be given to Prashant Kishor, who displayed enormous energy and organisational skills," said veteran socialist leader Shivanand Tiwary, who had been one of the foremost participants in the 'JP movement' of the 1970s and has been associated with parties including the RJD and JD(U).

Questions ouvertes

  • What will be the immediate political ramifications for the Bihar state government?
  • How will this victory impact Kishor's future political strategy?
