Rival Parties Clash Over Democratic Party's Special Counsel Bill

Rival parties continued to clash Monday over the ruling Democratic Party (DP)'s push for a special counsel bill to investigate indictments, including those involving President Lee Jae Myung, based on allegedly fabricated charges and evidence under the former government.

The proposed bill seeks an independent probe into allegations that the prosecution under the previous Yoon Suk Yeol administration had fabricated evidence to indict then opposition leader Lee in multiple cases, including those involving alleged illegal remittances to North Korea and a development corruption scandal.

Under the bill, the independent special counsel will have the authority to decide whether to proceed with or drop 12 ongoing cases, eight of which are connected to Lee, if evidence of fabrication is found.

A DP-led parliamentary special committee looking into the alleged fabricated indictments wrapped up a monthlong probe Thursday and decided to file complaints against 31 witnesses on perjury and other charges.

The DP unilaterally introduced the special counsel bill the same day, stressing the need for an independent probe to verify the allegations to ensure fairness and address concerns over politically biased prosecutors.

The main opposition People Power Party (PPP) has strongly denounced the DP's move, labeling it as a blatant attempt to shield Lee from his trials, suspended after he took office in June last year.

The PPP has also criticized the bill as unconstitutional, warning that allowing a special counsel appointed by the president to halt trials that involve the president himself could undermine the principle of separation of powers.

Stepping up their criticism Monday, PPP lawmakers held an emergency meeting at the National Assembly to discuss the unconstitutionality of the bill, slamming the DP's move as an attempt to "wipe away Lee's crimes."

Political tensions are expected to continue as the DP-controlled National Assembly seeks to pass the bill ahead of the June 3 local elections.
