被害女性の長男と次男は当時、近くで農作業をしていた。自宅にいた父親から連絡を受けて駆けつけた際、少年らと鉢合わせしてバールのようなもので殴られ、長男は右腕、次男は頭を負傷した。現場では凶器とみられる刃物とバールが見つかった。
捜査関係者によると、竹前容疑者は少年らに車や凶器を渡し、事件時には離れた場所からスマートフォンを使ってリアルタイムで指示を出していたとみられる。
