Pourquoi c'est important

Scotland is preparing for their first World Cup in 28 years. Key players Scott McTominay and Scott McKenna have had recent health issues.

Taille de police

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke says Scott McTominay is feeling "perfect and ready to go" for the World Cup opener against Haiti after recovering from an upset stomach.

The Napoli midfielder took part in training on Friday having missed out on Thursday due to a slight illness.

The 29-year-old travelled separately from the rest of the squad as a precaution after they arrived in Boston, alongside a doctor.

Although pleased McTominay is available, Clarke downplayed the significance of any one player to his side's chances.

"I've got 26 superstars here," he said. "To try to put so much on to one person is not fair.

"We've built everything we've done over the last seven years on the squad, the team, everyone being together and playing their part at certain times.

"We are delighted with Scott's abilities and what he can bring to the team. But we are going to need another 15 to bring the same if we want to have a positive tournament."

Centre-back Scott McKenna, who has not trained this week, will miss the Haiti game with a calf issue but is expected to train on Monday.

Scotland get their first World Cup in 28 years under way when they face Haiti on Saturday (Sunday, 02:00 BST) at Boston Stadium in Foxborough.

They will also face Morocco and Brazil in the group stage.

Questions ouvertes

  • Will McKenna be fit for subsequent matches?
  • How will the team perform without a single star player?
