Pourquoi c'est important
Sovereign Gold Bonds are government securities denominated in grams of gold issued by the RBI, with an eight-year maturity and early redemption options after five years.
For those invested in Sovereign Gold Bonds, early redemption for select tranches is possible from August 2026. This opportunity arises five years post-issue. Investors should ensure they submit their redemption applications within the stipulated timelines, as the redemption value will reflect gold prices from the previous three working days. Missing the submission period could mean a denial of the premature redemption option.
If you own Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs) issued a few years ago and are planning to cash them before the eight-year maturity period, August offers an opportunity to do so for select tranches. SGB investors will become eligible to exit their investments in August 2026 through the RBI's premature redemption facility.
According to a statement from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), investors get the option to redeem their SGB investments prematurely after the fifth year from the date of the issue of such gold bonds on a date on which interest is payable.
Investors must submit their SGB premature redemption requests within official timelines through banks, post offices, NSDL, CDSL or RBI Retail Direct. Missing the request submission window may lead to the rejection of a premature redemption request.
The following Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) tranches are eligible for premature redemption in August 2026:

SGBs are government securities denominated in grams of gold. They are substitutes for holding physical gold. Investors have to pay the issue price in cash and the bonds are redeemed in cash on maturity. The bond is issued by the RBI on behalf of the Government of India.
The redemption value of a gold bond is calculated based on the simple average closing price of the gold of 999 purity published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA) for the preceding three working days, as per an RBI rule.
Though the tenor of the bond is 8 years, early encashment/redemption of the bond is allowed after the fifth year from the date of the issue on coupon payment dates. The bond will be tradable on exchanges, if held in the demat form. It can also be transferred to any other eligible investor.
In case of premature redemption, investors can approach the concerned bank/SHCIL offices/post office/agent 30 days before the coupon payment date. The request for premature redemption can only be entertained if the investor approaches the concerned bank/post office at least one day before the coupon payment date.
The proceeds will be credited to the customer’s bank account provided at the time of applying for the bond.
