Suryakumar Yadav Faces Potential Ouster as T20 Captain; Shreyas Iyer Frontrunner
Suryakumar Yadav captaincy: India's T20 captaincy could be set for a change, with reports suggesting that Suryakumar Yadav is facing the possibility of losing the role. According to PTI, Shreyas Iyer has emerged as the leading candidate to take over the captaincy, amid growing scrutiny of Suryakumar's recent batting form despite India's successful ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. Reports also suggest that the selectors are assessing leadership options ahead of India's upcoming T20I assignments against Ireland and England.
Suryakumar Yadav's stint as India's T20 captain could be nearing a turning point, with a PTI report suggesting that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering a leadership change ahead of the team's upcoming white-ball assignments.
According to PTI, the BCCI's Apex Committee is expected to meet on Thursday, and one of the major talking points could be the future of India's T20 captaincy. Sources indicated that Suryakumar may lose the leadership role, with Shreyas Iyer emerging as the frontrunner to replace him.
"SKY is expected to lose his captaincy duties and Shreyas Iyer is expected to take over as the new Team India skipper in the shortest format," a BCCI source told PTI.
Why Is Suryakumar Yadav's Captaincy Being Discussed?
The speculation comes despite India successfully defending their ICC T20 World Cup title earlier this year under Suryakumar's leadership.
India became the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup and also the first side to lift the trophy in front of a home crowd. However, while the team achieved remarkable success, Suryakumar's individual performances have remained under scrutiny.
The Mumbai Indians batter struggled for consistency during both the T20 World Cup and IPL 2026, leading to growing questions about his place in the side and his future as captain.
Poor Run Of Form Raises Concerns
Suryakumar's latest setback came in the opening match of the T20 Mumbai League, where he scored just 19 runs from 11 balls for Triumph Knights before being dismissed by spinner Rahul Sawant.
His IPL 2026 campaign was also disappointing. Representing Mumbai Indians, he managed only 260 runs in 13 matches at an average of 20.76 as the five-time champions failed to reach the playoffs.
During the T20 World Cup, he scored 242 runs in nine matches at an average of 30.25. Although he produced an unbeaten 84 against the USA, he struggled to deliver consistent match-winning performances.
Shreyas Iyer Emerges As Favourite For The Role
According to PTI, Shreyas Iyer has emerged as the leading candidate to take over the captaincy.
The Mumbai batter is reportedly set for a return to India's T20 side after an impressive IPL 2026 campaign with Punjab Kings. Iyer scored 498 runs during the tournament and once again showcased his leadership credentials.
His experience as a captain in domestic cricket and the IPL is believed to be working in his favour as selectors evaluate future leadership options.
Tilak Varma And Ishan Kishan Also In The Conversation
The PTI report also stated that other names are being discussed for leadership responsibilities.
Tilak Varma, who has impressed in recent seasons with both bat and temperament, is reportedly being considered as a long-term option. Meanwhile, explosive wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan is also said to be in the mix.
The selectors appear keen to identify leaders who can guide the team through the next cycle of ICC events.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Pushes For National Call-Up
One of the biggest talking points ahead of the squad announcement is the rise of young sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
The teenager finished IPL 2026 as the Orange Cap winner after scoring a stunning 776 runs. His performances have reportedly put him firmly in contention for a place in India's T20 squad.
If selected, it would mark a significant milestone in what has already been a breakthrough year for the youngster.
Ireland And England Tour Looms Large
India's next T20 assignment begins later this month with a two-match series against Ireland, followed by a five-match series against England during the European tour.
The first T20I against Ireland is scheduled for June 26, with the second match taking place on June 28.
With squad announcements expected soon, the focus is now firmly on whether the selectors stick with Suryakumar Yadav or opt for a new leader.
What Next For Suryakumar Yadav?
There is no denying Suryakumar's contribution to India's T20 success over the years. His fearless batting and innovative strokeplay have made him one of the format's most influential players.
However, cricket often moves quickly, and recent performances have intensified scrutiny around his role in the team.
For now, all eyes are on the BCCI's decision. If PTI's report proves accurate, India could soon enter a new era in T20 cricket with Shreyas Iyer at the helm.
"Whether the selectors choose continuity or a fresh direction remains to be seen, but the coming weeks could prove crucial for India's T20 future."
