Tamil Nadu faces a stark weather divide this week. Western and southern districts are bracing for heavy rains, thunderstorms, and gusty winds until June 7. Meanwhile, Chennai and northern coastal areas will continue to endure intense heat and humidity, with temperatures potentially exceeding 40°C. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

Tamil Nadu is set for a sharp weather contrast this week. While several western and southern districts are likely to receive heavy rainfall until June 7, residents in Chennai and other northern coastal areas may continue to grapple with intense heat and humidity.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) have warned of widespread rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across large parts of the state, even as temperatures remain above 40°C in some northern districts.

June 3–7: Heavy Rain Forecast for Several Districts

Weather officials have forecast heavy rainfall across more than 15 districts, with some reports indicating weather activity could impact up to 22 districts over the coming week. The rain is expected to be concentrated in western and southern Tamil Nadu as conditions become favourable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon.

Districts likely to receive heavy rain include:

Nilgiris Coimbatore Theni Tiruppur Dindigul Tenkasi Tirunelveli Kanyakumari Erode Namakkal Salem Dharmapuri Krishnagiri Tirupattur Vellore Tiruvannamalai Ranipet Madurai

According to IMD forecasts, rainfall activity is expected to continue in many of these districts until June 7.

Chennai and North Coastal Tamil Nadu Face Heat and Humidity

Even as rain clouds gather over parts of the state, Chennai and neighbouring coastal districts are expected to remain uncomfortable. Meteorologists have warned that a combination of high temperatures and elevated humidity levels could create heatwave-like conditions across northern coastal Tamil Nadu.

Recent observations showed temperatures crossing 40°C in Chennai, Vellore and Tiruttani, with maximum temperatures likely to rise by another 2°C to 3°C at isolated locations in north Tamil Nadu.

Thunderstorms and Strong Winds Also Likely

Apart from heavy rain, the forecast includes:

Thunderstorms Lightning activity Gusty winds Localised waterlogging in low-lying areas

The RMC has advised residents in affected districts to stay alert for rapidly changing weather conditions, especially during afternoon and evening hours.

Government Monitoring Rainfall Situation

Tamil Nadu authorities say they are closely watching developments as rainfall activity intensifies, reports Times of India. State minister K.A. Sengottaiyan said the government is monitoring the rainfall situation across Tamil Nadu and assessing preparedness measures wherever required.

Officials are expected to coordinate with district administrations to address any disruptions caused by heavy rain, thunderstorms or strong winds.

Monsoon Advance Boosting Rainfall Activity

The increase in rainfall is linked to conditions becoming favourable for the southwest monsoon's further advance over southern India. As the monsoon progresses, weather experts expect rain-bearing systems to become more active across western and southern Tamil Nadu, bringing relief to regions that have experienced intense summer heat in recent weeks.

Highest Rainfall Recorded So Far

Recent weather data showed significant rainfall in some districts:

Thirumalvadi in Dharmapuri recorded 9 cm of rain. Okkur in Sivaganga recorded 8 cm of rain.

These figures highlight the growing intensity of pre-monsoon and monsoon-linked weather activity across the state.

What Residents Should Expect Through June 7

The weather pattern over Tamil Nadu through June 7 is expected to remain divided:

Western and southern districts: Heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds. Chennai and northern coastal districts: Persistent heat, humidity and occasional heatwave-like conditions.

With both heavy rain and high temperatures affecting different regions simultaneously, residents are advised to keep track of local forecasts and weather alerts throughout the week.
