Teen Gunman in Georgia School Shooting Discussed Online Notoriety with Mother

Colt Gray, the 16-year-old gunman responsible for the Apalachee High School shooting in Georgia, discussed his online notoriety with his mother in recorded jail calls, leading to her being barred from contacting him. During the sentencing hearing, prosecutors played clips of these conversations, revealing Gray’s excitement over "fan art" and comments about him online. His mother promised to create a shrine for him.

Gray pleaded guilty to 55 counts, including murder, for the September 4, 2024, shooting that killed two teachers, Richard "Ricky" Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie, and two students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo. Eight others were wounded.

Investigator Ashley Gilleland testified that Gray idolized mass shooters, planned the attack meticulously, and intended to survive for the notoriety. Contrary to Gray’s claims of spontaneity, evidence showed careful planning, including a step-by-step notebook and online discussions about gaining fame through a school shooting.

Gray’s father, Colin, was convicted for providing the assault rifle and is awaiting sentencing.

Candice Broce, Director of the Division of Family & Children Services, testified that Gray suffered abuse and neglect, with no record of medical care until detention. After being barred from contacting his mother and starting medication, staff noted a significant positive change in his behavior.

Judge Nicholas Primm will decide if Gray will have the possibility of parole, with the prosecution seeking a life sentence without parole.
