Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating a double fatality in Dandenong, in Melbourne's south-east, early this morning.
Police say a car was travelling along the Princes Highway when the driver lost control and crashed into a tree on the centre median strip about 1:20am.
The car then burst into flames, killing the driver and a passenger.
Detective Inspector Craig McEvoy said local police were in the area at the time and were the first to come across the scene.
"Two males have lost their life," he said.
"We're still trying to identify who those males are."
He said police were yet to confirm the ages of the deceased.
Footage from the scene shows a crumpled silver-coloured car on the side of the road near the intersection of the highway and James Street.
Inspector McEvoy said debris was scattered across a large area, with a front tyre found around 100 metres from the crash site on the opposite side of the road.
He said detectives believed the car had been speeding.
The crash happened out the front of Dandenong High School.
"We're also engaging with the Department of Education to ensure they're aware of the circumstances," Inspector McEvoy said.
"They'll put all the care they can around the school kids to make sure they're exposure is reduced as best we can."
He said police did not believe the car had been stolen.
The Princes Highway is expected to be closed for most of this morning while investigations continue.
Police warned of traffic disruptions in both directions between Robinson and Potter streets.
Detectives were still trying to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.
