Pourquoi c'est important

UK net migration has fallen below 200,000 for the first time since the Covid pandemic. This is largely driven by a sharp fall in the number of people arriving for work. The UK government has introduced tighter immigration rules.

UK net migration has fallen below 200,000 for the first time since the Covid pandemic, driven largely by a sharp fall in the number of people arriving for work, according to new official figures.

Data released by the Office for National Statistics showed estimated net migration stood at 171,000 in the year ending December 2025. The figure measures the difference between people arriving in the UK and those leaving the country.

The latest total marks a steep decline from the revised figure of 331,000 recorded a year earlier and is significantly lower than the peak of 944,000 seen in 2023.

The ONS said the biggest reason behind the fall was a 47% drop in the number of non-EU nationals arriving in Britain for work-related reasons.

The decline follows tighter immigration rules introduced by the UK government, including stricter salary requirements for skilled worker visas and the closure of visa routes that previously allowed overseas care workers to enter the country more easily.

The figures also showed fewer international students remaining in Britain after completing their studies, contributing further to the decline in overall migration numbers.

Around 813,000 long-term migrants arrived in the UK during 2025, down 20% compared to the previous year. Of the 627,000 non-EU arrivals, roughly half came for study purposes, while about a quarter arrived for work, according to the ONS.

The statistics agency also reported that net migration among EU nationals remained negative at minus 42,000, continuing a trend seen since mid-2022.

Meanwhile, net migration of British nationals remained broadly stable at negative 136,000, meaning more British citizens left the UK than returned during the period.

Excluding the pandemic years, when global travel restrictions sharply reduced movement, the latest figure is among the lowest net migration levels recorded in the UK since 2012.

Questions ouvertes

  • What are the long-term economic implications of this decrease in net migration?
  • Will the UK government further adjust its immigration policies in response to these figures?
  • How will this trend affect specific sectors reliant on foreign labor, such as healthcare and hospitality?
  • What is the breakdown of the 'other' reasons for migration among non-EU nationals?

Constitutional experts state that the motion to remove former Allahabad HC judge Justice Yashwant Varma is pointless after his resignation on April 9, following the discovery of unaccounted money. Varma resigned before the inquiry committee's report could be tabled in Parliament. Experts argue that a resigned judge cannot be impeached, making the tabling of the report a mere formality.
