Emergency services responded to a public housing unit fire on King Street in Buderim on Sunday evening, where a 21-year-old woman escaped with life-threatening burns and later died. Police have since established a crime scene and are investigating the cause of the blaze.

Taille de police

A woman has died after suffering extensive burns in a unit fire on the Sunshine Coast.

Emergency services were called to a public housing unit block on King Street in Buderim at about 7:30pm on Sunday after receiving multiple calls reporting the blaze.

The unit was fully engulfed and it took five firefighting crews more than an hour to extinguish the flames.

A 21-year-old Kallangur woman escaped the home but suffered life-threatening burns to her entire body.

She was taken the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in a critical condition, but died this morning.

Paramedics also assessed a woman in her 30s but she did not require treatment.

The rest of the complex was evacuated while crews extinguished the blaze.

Lajco Rozumberski lives next door and described the chaos that unfolded.

"I felt very scared because I didn't know what was happening," he said.

"When I came out, all the police and fire brigade were all around.

"The road was blocked … there were a lot of police cars."

Crime scene established

Police have established a crime scene and investigators will attend the unit this morning to determine the cause of the fire.

Senior Sergeant Robert Lowry from the Sunshine Coast Criminal Investigation Branch said the investigation was in its "very early stages".

"We have declared a [crime] scene. We're speaking to people," Senior Sergeant Robert Lowry said.

"They are assisting us with our inquiries and we will continue that process and we'll probably know more at the end of the day."

He said the investigation would include establishing whether accelerants were used or if the fire was of a "suspicious nature".

He said the woman who escaped the fire was supporting the victim's family.

"The scene was quite confronting for all of the emergency services that attended and support is being provided," Senior Sergeant Lowry said.

"I also feel for the family of the deceased lady and I understand that family is also receiving support."
