A similar pattern was visible in the first phase of polling on April 23, when 18 assembly segments recorded higher female turnout than male. Kurseong topped that list with 87,002 women voters compared to 83,405 men. Sitalkuchi in Cooch Behar saw 1.41 lakh women voting against 1.37 lakh men, while Darjeeling and Kalimpong also reported higher participation by women. Karandighi in North Dinajpur and Phansidewa in Darjeeling district were the other constituencies where women outvoted men.
Notably, this trend has persisted despite the SIR exercise reducing the voter gender ratio to 950 across the 16 districts that voted in the first phase. Election Commission data showed that women voters turned out in greater numbers, with turnout at 92.7% across 152 assembly segments, compared with 91% for men.
