Gilberto Cárdenas, a respected sociologist and advocate for Latino and Chicano identity through academia and art, died Sunday at 79 in Austin, Texas, after a long illness. He was known for establishing Mexican American Studies at UT Austin and co-founding the Institute for Latino Studies at Notre Dame.
